Winter can be a lot of fun for people young and old. However, staying safe when the weather is cold is always of paramount importance. Here are are some senior safety tips for winter:
Keep Cozy and Warm All Winter Long
The human body is usually at a resting temperature of 98° on average and it should stay that way. Body temperatures that dip below 95 can run into serious danger of developing hypothermia. Thus, it’s important to keep warm during the winter whether you’re indoors or outside.
Here are a few things you might need to stay warm:
- Gloves
- Long Underwear for sleeping
- A warm, fuzzy hat
- Sturdy coats
- Waterproof boots
- Thick socks
- Scarves
You can even knit some of these items if you want to make them special.
Keep Your Chin Up
Wintertime depression affects many people, but seniors can be particularly susceptible. Many seniors are afraid to go out because of snow and ice, which can lead to long periods of isolation. This isolation can lead to loneliness and then to symptoms of depression. The key in these cases is to make sure that your loved ones are staying social and that you’re visiting them regularly to help them feel loved.
There are many different kinds of events that crop up during the holiday season that you can take your loved one to. We will also be hosting a variety of events for the residents of our assisted living homes.
Fortify Your Immune System
As the weather gets colder, flu season comes along with the colder temperatures. For seniors, the flu can be more dangerous than a runny nose. To help protect your loved one’s health, avoid contact with them if you’re sick and make sure to wash your hands often when you do spend time with them to limit the spread of germs.
