As we move through the stages of life, it becomes increasingly important to stay active in our minds as well as in our bodies.  While we know it is important, we might not always make the time for it, have the energy for it, or have someone to do activities with.  Being a part of an independent assisted living facility like Kenwood Care can make being active and social easier and more enjoyable. Let’s take a look at ways seniors can continue on the wellness path.

how to stay active with your mind and body

Keep Your Mind Sharp

Is there an activity you used to enjoy that you’ve been neglecting? Finding a senior living housing community where you can continue to pursue new hobbies and continue doing the things you love is extremely important.  Activities are a great way to keep the mind focused and sharp. Carve out time in the day to do things that you love or would be interested in doing. Some activities offered in our assisted living communities are:

  • Painting or drawing
  • Playing cards
  • Playing board games
  • Puzzles
  • Bingo
  • Reading
  • Discussing books, current events, or tv shows
  • Playing a musical instrument
  • Knitting or needlepoint

There are plenty of skills and activities you can re-learn, sharpen, or discover for the first time. If you don’t know what hobby is right for you, start at the top of our list and give each a try.  The Kenwood Activities Coordinator is happy to take suggestions on new and exciting events. You may find that you really enjoy something that you never had an interest in before.

Keep Moving

Exercise in any form is very important in any senior living community.  It is never too late to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, and there are ways for you to get active even if you have a mobility concern or a disability. Whether you used to train for the Olympics or you’re a beginner to exercise, any of these activities can be both enjoyable and beneficial to your physical health:

  • Chair and gentle Yoga
  • Stretching
  • Aerobics
  • Dancing
  • Balance exercises
  • Strength building
  • Practicing good posture

Adding physical activity in healthy doses to your daily routine can help you avoid fatigue, sleep better and reduce your risk of injury. At Kenwood Care Assisted Living we provide these opportunities for our seniors through the activities we offer in our homes. Plus, we all know that exercise is more fun when you do it with friends.

Stay Social

Social activities and interactions are necessary so we connect with our peers and don’t feel lonely.  We have found that most residents in our assisted living houses love the friendships that they make. Being part of a senior retirement community like Kenwood Care gives our residents friends to eat their meals with, friends to talk to throughout the day or friends to just sit and watch a tv show.  Social activities like outings, cultural events, and field trips can also be extremely fun for residents.

Eat Nutritious Meals

One of the most important aspects of health is nutrition and the foods you eat. While we all could probably eat a little healthier, it gets even more important the older we get. When you move your loved one into an independent assisted living facility, you can rest easy at night knowing they are getting all of the nutrition they need. At our senior living centers, all of our residents receive three chef-prepared and nutritious meals a day. We also accommodate residents who have special dietary needs. Enjoying these delicious meals in our dining rooms with other seniors is another benefit of retirement living in our homes.
