Maryland Alzheimer’s Facts
September 14, 2016
Over 14 percent of the Maryland population is over the age of 65. With such a large population of senior residents, Maryland has some of the higher Alzheimer’s rates in the country. The statistics that surround Alzheimer’s in our area are astounding and as an industry that cares for the elderly, we believe that these facts deserve to be shared to help shed light on the very common disease facing many senior residents.
More than 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s and it is the 6th leading cause of death in the United states, killing more than breast and prostate cancer combined. 1 in 3 of our nation’s seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia, and every 66 seconds someone in the United States will develop the disease.
In 2015, more than 15 million caregivers provided an estimate of 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care to loved ones with Alzheimer’s. And the disease costs caregivers more than just their time; families spend more than $5,000 a year caring for their loved ones. This means that some families who care for relatives with Alzheimer’s forgo family vacations, skip bills, and even go hungry.
More Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease than ever before, and the rate is constantly growing. An estimated 5.4 million Americans of all ages suffer from the disease as of today.
Of the 5.4 million, an estimated 5.2 million people are over the age of 65 – that’s 1 in 9. It is currently estimated that by mid-century, someone in the U.S. will develop the disease every 33 seconds.
Because numbers continue to escalate this rapidly, and because the baby boomer generation has begun to reach the critical age of 65 and beyond, the outcome is expected to triple. With that spike in cases, the need for caregivers and assisted living is also expected to increase, especially in Maryland.
