palliative care

Palliative care, sometimes refereed to as hospice, is specialized medical care for people who suffer from serious illness. It is focused mainly on providing the patient with relief from the symptoms and stress of their illness and thereby improving their remaining quality of life.

Doctors tend to recommend palliative care for those who suffer chronic, incurable or terminal health conditions that drastically reduce the individuals quality of life. Most often we hear of this kind of care when speaking to terminal cancer patients who are given limited time to live and who suffer chronic and ongoing pain from their illness.

Some Common serious illnesses that may require Palliative care are:

  • Parkinson’s
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Lung disease
  • Heart failure
  • Cancer
  • Kidney and liver failure
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s

Palliative care requires additional support such as:

  • Emotional support
  • Spiritual and religious support
  • Counseling
  • Relief of unpleasant symptoms such as fatigue, nausea or shortness of breath
  • Pain Relief
  • Help with anxiety, depression, and stress
  • Help sleeping

Who needs Palliative care?

The easy way to determine if your loved one may require special palliative care is if the choice has been made to make them as comfortable as possible instead of focusing on prolonging their lifespan. Generally speaking we do everything we can to live as long as we can, but when we are hit with a serious life threatening illness, sometimes that isn’t treatable, we shift the focus to living comfortably instead.

If your loved one’s doctor has recommended palliative care, or your family is seeking the highest quality of life for them, consider Kenwood Care as an option. Kenwood caregivers are highly trained to administer most aspects of palliative care. Your loved ones will have access to all of their medical needs, such as therapists, counselors, and psycologists. In addition we also encourage families to remain active and communicate with their loved ones during the process, this reduces stress for the person in care and their family.
