5 Ways for Seniors to Stay Active this Winter
January 3, 2018
Winter brings freezing temperatures and snow storms that make it unpleasant and sometimes dangerous to spend time outdoors. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of ways you can stay active indoors this season!
Activity #1 – Tabletop Games
Card and board games can help cure boredom during the cold season. Improve your brain health and keep mentally active by playing games with friends and neighbors, like:
- Trivial Pursuit
- Brain Games
Activity #2 – Exercise
There are plenty of low-intensity exercises that you can perform indoors during the winter that will keep you active healthy. Swimming, tennis, and dance are just a few of the enjoyable fitness exercises you can tailor to your specific physical capabilities.
Yoga is another great way to keep mentally and physically active while not overexerting yourself. Most yoga can be performed in a seated position, meaning you can easily do it from a bed or chair if necessary. Yoga has additional benefits to your health as well, and promotes balance and relaxation.
Activity #3 – Field Trips
Day-trips to nearby cities are great for any time of year, because cities are full of interesting places to visit. Some ideas for indoor entertainment that will help you remain active are:
- Art Shows/Craft Fairs
- Workshops (Learn a new skill!)
- Indoor Sporting Events
Activity #4 – Cooking and Baking
Learning how to cook new meals or trying your hand at dishes you haven’t made in a long time is another fun way to stay active as a senior. Bake a cake for a friend’s birthday, perfect a new recipe, or host a dinner party for family members just because!
Giving friends and family another reason to visit with you will allow you to remain socially active and will enable you to keep strong relationships with those closest to you.
Activity #5 – Creative Arts
Artistic activities like painting, drawing, or playing an instrument can promote hand-eye coordination and are all known to stimulate the brain in many positive ways. Paint pictures to decorate your home or give as gifts, or learn how to play a new instrument this winter season to stay active when the weather keeps you indoors.
