What is Pain Management?
January 16, 2019
Not all illnesses have a cure and for those that endure chronic pain, the future may seem rather dim. However, there is a branch of medicine known as “pain management” and this branch works to help patients improve their quality of life by addressing their pain. Today we’re going to talk about pain management, who it’s for, and what it is. Let’s take a look.
What is Pain Management?
Pain management is exactly what it sounds like. It is a method of treatment that is focused on managing pain to minimize suffering. There are many conditions that may lead to chronic pain. Cancer, Arthritis, Crohn’s. Fibromyalgia, IBS, Sciatica, and many other illnesses may cause chronic pain and to improve your quality of life, pain management may need to be implemented.
Pain management techniques range drastically according to the pain that needs management and the comfort of the patient. For example, some patients may not feel comfortable being prescribed opiate drugs due to their side effects and potential for abuse. However, for other patients, opiates may be a good fit. It all depends on the specific patient and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing pain.
What Are Common Methods for Pain Management?
Some common forms of pain management treatment include the prescription of pharmaceuticals, physical therapy, cognitive therapies, acupuncture, light therapies, and “intervention procedures”. Depending on the type and severity of the pain, more than one treatment may be used to help provide support and relief.
How Can You Manage Your Loved One’s Pain?
If your loved one is in pain, then helping them manage that pain is important for both of you. To start the process, sit down and talk to them about what they’re feeling. Ask them where the pain is and ask them to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10. You should then connect with a medical professional to address this pain in a way that your loved one is comfortable with. You may also try alternative therapies if your loved one is interested in them.
Remember, though it may be difficult to watch, your loved one is the patient. Their comfort level is the most important factor in their continual care.
