Older Americans Month (OAM), established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens—and observed annually in May—serves as an important time to honor and recognize the invaluable contributions of older adults in our communities.

This year’s theme, Flip the Script on Aging, aims to impact how society perceives and approaches aging while encouraging communities to engage in dialogue that can help dispel stereotypes and misconceptions.

While the specific observance and its themes might vary from state to state and family to family, the underlying intention of the month-long observance is to appreciate the wisdom and experience our seniors bring into our lives. Older Americans Month also provides an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the needs of the elderly and how our communities can support their well-being.

Here are just four meaningful ways to celebrate our seniors during Older Americans Month, keeping their best interests at heart and ensuring they feel valued and cared for:

  • Host Appreciation Events: Consider organizing special events such as luncheons, tea parties, or small gatherings that allow seniors to connect and enjoy each other’s company. These events can also include recognition ceremonies where family members and community leaders highlight the seniors’ achievements and contributions.
  • Educational Workshops: Conduct workshops or seminars that focus on topics important to seniors, such as healthy aging, financial planning, or using technology. These workshops can help seniors stay informed about ways to maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life.
  • Community Service Projects: Engage seniors in community service projects that allow them to contribute their skills and experience. Projects could range from mentoring younger generations to participating in community beautification efforts. This not only keeps them actively involved but also reinforces their value to the community.
  • Consider Assisted Living Options: If your loved one is at a point where they need more consistent care, Older Americans Month can be a time to explore assisted living options. Kenwood Care has been providing trusted care for over 30 years. We offer a compassionate environment that respects the independence of seniors while providing the care they need. Transitioning to an assisted living facility like one of our four convenient Howard County homes can ensure that seniors receive the support they need in a setting that feels like home.
