What Are “Levels of Care” in Assisted Living? 

In assisted living, “levels of care” refer to the amount and type of support a resident requires to live safely and comfortably.  

These needs can change gradually or suddenly, and may include: 

• Help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, or grooming. 
• Medication management. 
• Mobility assistance. 
• Supervision for safety. 
• Memory care support for Alzheimer’s or dementia. 

Generally, levels of care fall into three categories: 

Level 1 – Low Support Needs
Residents may be largely independent yet benefit from routine medication reminders, light supervision, meal support, and a safe, structured environment. 

Level 2 – Moderate Support Needs
Residents require more hands-on assistance with ADLs like bathing or dressing. Care is personalized and adjusted as needs evolve. 

Level 3 – Advanced Support Needs
Residents need extensive assistance throughout the day, including advanced memory care, close supervision, and comprehensive help with daily tasks. At Kenwood Care, this higher level of care is delivered without forcing residents to leave the comfort of their home or familiar caregivers. 

Many assisted living communities require that residents move to different facilities—or pay significantly more – as they advance through the levels of care.

Here, residents receive care in small, residential-style homes housing just 16 residents each. A tight caregiver-to-resident ratio allows our experienced staff to get to know residents deeply, allowing them to recognize subtle changes early and respond thoughtfully. 

As needs increase, care is adjusted seamlessly and unobtrusively. Familiar caregivers, routines, and surroundings remain the same, which is especially important for seniors with memory loss.
